Horror Movie Review: Trick 'r Treat

To start off the month I watched Trick 'r Treat. I've never seen it before, but I've heard some good things. So I knew I'd be in for a good 'treat'
I'm sorry I made that joke. There will be some gore, so sorry before hand if you're sensitive to that sort of thing. As said before, my reviews may contain spoilers.

Trick r' Treat is an anthology film, which means it has small stories to make up one big film. Lot's of the stories run into each other and the creature, Sam, shows up in each one of them. Because the stories all kind of cut into each other, I'll just tell each story as a whole.

The movie is set in a town that loves Halloween, there are lots of jack'o'lanterns and spooky decorations.

The first little story or introduction is about a couple who have come home after a Halloween celebration. It tells how Emma nags her husband to take down the decorations, but she ends up taking them down herself.

Nag nag nag.

Who the hell would take down decorations while it's still Halloween?
Luckily Emma gets killed by Sam for being such a stick in the mud.

Serves her right, really.

The second story starts with a fat kid tipping pumpkins off a wall and smashing them. He reaches a house, and climbs the stairs to find this sign:

When has that ever worked? This story is a short one, the kid takes all the chocolate and is caught by his Principal. His Principal teaches him a valuable lesson :)

This story follows five kids who are collecting pumpkins, their final destination is the abandoned rock quarry.

Once there, the girl dressed as an angel tells the old town legend and they have bought the pumpkins as an 'offering' to the legend.

They bring take the spooky elevator down to the spooky rock quarry. It all ends with some awesome ghost children.
This was probably my favourite story of them all, I loved the fog and the lanterns. What I found funny was the amount of leaves falling at the top of the quarry. There were no close trees so I was wondering where they were coming from!

The next story is about a group of girls coming into town for a party. The girls are also trying to help Laurie lose her virginity. One thing I found funny about this story was their ability to find good Halloween costumes on the evening of Halloween. I don't know about you, but generally it's only the crap ones left.

The last story is about a bitter old man who hates Halloween. Sam comes along and teaches him a lesson that he doesn't forget.

I really enjoyed watching Trick 'r Treat, I really didn't know what to expect so I was surprised at how good it was. I think this movie went straight to DVD in Australia, but it's much better than any horror films I've seen come out in a long time. I recommend it highly!
The settings were beautiful, and I'm sure it would be familiar to a lot of my American readers. Lots of crunchy leaves and awesome Halloween decorations. Plus the costumes!

Hope you enjoyed my little review and it's inspired you to watch this great film.

Scare factor: 0/5 I wasn't frightened at all
Gore factor: 4/5 Nice gore effects, didn't really linger on any part but it was realistic and bloody.
Boob factor: 2/5 A few boob shots and a second of a porn film.
OVERALL: 7/10 Good film!

This is one of my favorite things to watch when I am sick. Usually, I introduce this movie as "the cutest horror movie you'll ever watch."

Hahahaha! Thanks for the great review! I'll have to add it to my list of Halloween movies to watch this month.
